PTMs OF ENDOCYTIC ADAPTORS MEDIATE THEIR REROUTING FROM PLASMA MEMBRANE TO AUTOPHAGOSOMES

In neurons, the formation of autophagosomes and their turnover are spatially segregated, since distally-formed autophagosomes require the microtubule-based transport to the cell soma, where the majority of lysosomes is located. AV transport is promoted by the endocytic adaptor AP-2, which needs to relocalize from the plasma membrane, where it orchestrates the clathrin-mediated endocytosis, to distally-formed autophagosomes. However, how AP-2 switches between its function in clathrin-mediated endocytosis and autophagy is currently unknown. This project focus on precise mechanisms which regulate the cellular relocalization of AP-2 in neurons.

"Nature and science have always impressed me and because of this, I studied biology. During my undergraduate studies, I took many courses from various disciplines, and one of them was human genetics, which completely changed my path. I did my master's in genetics and worked on the mechanism of Alzheimer's Disease. Afterward, I decided to stay in the field of neurodegeneration since this subject always keeps me enthusiastic."

"I studied biology back home in Oviedo (Spain) and I moved to Germany for my Master's in Stem Cells Biology in Bochum and to perform my doctoral dissertation here in Cologne. My research focuses on how stem cells in the brain divide in order to maintain this population of stem cells at the same time that they give rise to the neurons forming our brain."
